May 1, 2010 - Mint Julep Jubilee - 2nd Annual Mint Julep Jubilee - A Kentucky Derby Celebration, Saturday, 3pm - 8pm at Poplar Grove Plantation, 10200 US Highway 17 N., Wilmington, NC. Live Race Coverage & Raffle for Fabulous Prizes, Mint Julep Station, Southern Fare Buffet, Live Music, Best Hat Contest, Garden Party Attire. Tickets $50.00 per person. Price includes beer, wine, mint juleps and a southern fare buffet. Purchase tickets online at www.jlwnc.org before April 21st. Tickets purchased after April 21st are $60.00 per person. May 1, 2010 - Jazz In The Park - 11:00 PM at the Wrightsville Beach Park, 1 Bob Sawyer Dr., Wrightsville Beach, NC. CFJAS will hold its annual Jazz In The Park. The concert will feature traditional, contemporary, and big band jazz. The music is free and open to the public. May 1, 2010 - Southport-Oak Island Area Golf Classic - 9:00 AM Shotgun Start. 4-person Captain's Choice. Numerous door prizes & prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive. Cash Prizes - Two Flights- 1st Place-$400; 2nd Place-$200; 3rd Place-$160 The entry fee includes cart, green fee, special gift, breakfast biscuit, coffee, hospitality cart and lunch. May 1, 2010 - Paw Jam - Saturday, 11 am - 5 pm, Battleship Park, Eagles Island, Battleship Dr., Wilmington, NC. Enjoy a day of fun and great music with your dog to raise money for area shelters and rescue groups. All proceeds benefit area no-kill, non-profit animal shelters and rescue groups. May 2, 2010 - Birds Islands of the Lower Cape Fear Cruise - On May 2nd, at 1:00 pm, the Winner Cruise Queen will leave Carolina Beach Marina. Battery Island, a 100 acre Audubon Sanctuary, is the state’s largest gathering of wading birds. A large portion of herons, egrets and ibises for the state of North Carolina nest here and raise their young. All proceeds go to support Battery Island under the care of the Audubon Society. Tickets are $35.00 per person. They may be purchased from 5084 Edinboro Lane, Wilmington, N.C. 28409 or from Wild Bird and Garden, Hanover Center, Wilmington. Seating is limited this year. Professor Emeritus of UNCW’s Biological Science Department, Dr. James Parnell; deputy Director of Audubon NC, Walker Golder; naturalist and education director for Audubon NC, commentator public radio WHQR, and author, Andy Wood, will all discuss wildlife seen on the cruise. May 14, 2010 - Cape Fear Disabled Sportsman's Tournament - The Cape Fear Disabled Sportsman Fishing Tournament is open to anyone with any disability to come and join in on a free day of fishing, friends, food, and fun. We love to see new faces as well as old friends. We offer a special welcome to any and all of our honored Disabled Veterans. The CFDST is put on annually by the Got Em On Live Bait fishing club and they really throw a shindig. The tourney is held at the Kure Beach Fishing Pier in Kure Beach, NC. Participants are provided with rods, tackle, bait, refreshments, food, t-shirts and prizes. Call (910)264-8397 for more information.
May 14 - 15, 2010 - Ibis Fest - A festival to promote nature-based tourism and celebrate the unique ecology of the lower Cape Fear River area through guided field trips on boats, kayaks and walking. There will also be workshops, exhibits, noted speakers and more covering topics of birding, nature writing, photography, native plants and invasive species.

May 22, 2010 - Port City Mopars Car Show - The Port City Mopars Car Club will hold its annual Car and Truck Show at the MayFaire Town Center, Military Cutoff Rd, Wilmington, NC. The show is open to all cars and trucks 20 years old or older. Free for spectators. Call (910)279-3419 for more information.
May 29 - 30, 2010 - Orange Street Arts Festival - This will be the largest festival yet, with over 50 artists. The artists will exhibit everything from watercolor to pottery to jewelry for sale. The festival will have continuous entertainment and food and drink available to the public. The event is free but donations are encouraged and accepted. The show will be open from 10am to 6pm, Saturday and 10am to 5pm Sunday. For more information call (910)251-1788.
May 30 - August 29, 2010 - Pleasure Island's Free Fireworks at the Beach - Enjoy free fireworks by the sea on the beach near the boardwalk every Thursday night from May 30th through August 29th. The fireworks are free and open to all, weather permitting. Schedule is subject to change without notice. The fireworks will begin after the sun had gone down (approx 9pm). May 30 - August 29, 2010 - Pleasure Island's Free Movies at the Lake - Free family movies at the Carolina Beach Lake Park every Sunday! 9PM, at Atlanta Avenue, Carolina Beach, NC. May 31, 2010 - Annual Memorial Day Observance - Monday, 5:45 pm. Remember those who gave their lives in service by honoring veterans at the Battleship's traditional Memorial Day Observance at Battleship Park featuring a military guest speaker, an all-service Color Guard, a 21-gun salute by a Marine Corps Honor Guard , a military band, Taps, and a memorial wreath cast onto the waters.
